Question: Are the Mauna Kea Protectors against science?

Answer: No. They are against destruction and desecration of a fragile, sacred place.  Many come from scientific backgrounds, and have great respect for the quest for knowledge.  They simply believe that science needs to find ways of seeking knowledge that do not destroy the Earth, or cultural practices and resources.

The scientific field of astronomy includes many extremely brilliant people.  Unfortunately, however, they (like many others) are often limited by what is deemed possible or desirable by current technology, or by those who fund their work.  The Protectors are taking a stand specifically against scientific practices that do a lot of damage -- to our planet, to traditional native cultures, and to public health and safety.  They are challenging science to do better.
