Act in the spirit of ALOHA, in accordance with the laws of the State of Hawaiʻi and international standards protecting indigenous peoples, the environment, and Mother Earth, to take expedient action in this matter.

Mauna Kea as the highest portal to the Hawaiian Universe is the pillar of Hawaiian consciousness. The mountain altar of Wākea, the celestial father and progenitor of the Hawaiian race is the ancestral and cultural connection of the Hawaiian people to the mountain. This mountain is the piko, or the place of connection where earth and sky meet and where the Hawaiians connect to their origins in the cosmos. On the Big Island buildings have to be 3 stories or less, hotels are limited to 7 stories. This telescope they are building on top of Mauna Kea is gonna be 18 stories (on Conservation Lands) They've also dug a hole 2 stories deep. A football field is 1.32 acres, this telescope is 5 acres. Mauna Kea is the main aquifer for the Island, this telescope will have a 5,000 gallon tank for waste storage (including hazardous chemicals). This is not only a cultural protest-it is for our environment and future generations.

The story of Ku and Poli’ahu (Mauna Kea snow goddess) suggests a Hawaiian understanding of the history of glaciation on the mountain. Mauna Kea was one of the few places in the tropics that was repeatedly covered by glaciers during the ice ages. on an island that lies within 20 degrees of the equator.

In the story, Ku, a deity representing the male force in the form of the rising sun — pursues Poli‘ahu, the woman of the mountain, but is constantly thwarted by frost, snow and freezing rain. When Ku finally embraces Poli‘ahu, her heart melts, the ice age is over, and the resulting snow melt forms the springs and streams that water the land below, providing life to the people.

Natural history is thus related in a beautiful and poetic way. The story expresses the deep attachment between the Hawaiian people and the earth around them. It relates natural phenomena as part of a great love story, an expression of unity and harmony that is at the heart of the Hawaiian cosmos.
